Rockster Neil Young schminkt zich alsof hij de dood zelf is. En brengt een album uit waarin hij fel tekeer gaat tegen de grootste producent van genetisch gemanipuleerde zaden ter wereld: ‘The Monsanto Years’.

Neil Young had altijd al oog voor het boerenbestaan. Al jong rijk geworden met zijn solo-albums en zijn bijdrage aan de super hippiegroep Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, kocht hij in de heuvels onder San Francisco een boerderij. Op zijn best verkochte album Harvest zong hij over de boerenknecht, die in de koop inbegrepen zat: “Old man”. Later ten tijde van het album Ragged Glory bezong hij zelfs ‘Farmer John’. Geen vrolijke boodschap, ook al schreef hij de tekst niet zelf.

Later, in 1985, werd hij samen met country-ster Willie Nelson een van de trekkers achter Farm Aid, waar hij nog steeds zelf optreed. Vorig jaar nog met een zwart T-shirt met de simpele tekst ‘Earth’. 

En nu zit er dus een album aan te komen waarin hij ten strijde trekt tegen Monsanto, producent van het volgens wetenschappers bijendodende gif Roundup, dat tot in de discountstore Action in Nederland te koop is. In het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift The Lancet werd gewaarschuwd dat het ook niet ongevaarlijk voor mensen is, mogelijk zelfs kankerverwekkend.

Ineens vermomt Young zichzelf als de dood en snijdt daar beelden van in zijn eigengemaakte filmpjes, die slordig en onscherp zijn, suggestief. Zelfs een zwart logootje siert zijn Facebook-pagina, een doodshoofd met een lepel en een vork eronder, in plaats van de twee gekruiste beenderen. Dat is het nieuwe beeld van Monsanto, als het aan Young ligt.

Op deze pagina gaf Young al een voorproefje van wat hij aan teksten heeft opgenomen. Het zijn vooralsnog aantekeningen, net zo ruw en ongepolijst als zijn films, of zijn concerten met zijn oude maten van Crazy Horse, die vorig jaar in Amsterdam eenmaal op gang gekomen deden denken aan een kudde op hol geslagen buffels. Niet te stuiten. Vrouwen vluchten de gangpaden op, in de Ziggo Dome, mannen probeerden in de storm overeind te blijven staan.

Ook weer een voorproefje, zo blijkt nu.

Het album komt op 16 juni uit. Hij knoopt er een reeks van  concerten aan vast, vooralsnog blijft hij in de Verenigde Staten. Jammer, want in Europa wordt nog kritischer tegen Monsanto aangekeken dan in de VS, vooral in landen als Frankrijk, Oostenrijk en Zwitserland. De zaden van dit bedrijf komen daar het land niet in, of de EU daar de aangesloten staten toestemming voor geeft of niet.
