Zoals pausen al eeuwen doen, schreef ook Paus Franciscus een pauselijke brief, een encycliek: over de opwarming van de aarde.  Het grote verschil: hij gooide er ook nog eens 63 tweets overheen.

De encycliek "Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home”, is traditioneel van opzet: een beschouwend document van 180 pagina’s over een brandende kwestie die de hele wereld in beroering brengt. Je moet er een zondagje voor gaan zitten. In dit geval loont dat, want het is een urgente redenering. De paus doet zelfs uitstapjes waarin hij een eeuwenoud conflict tussen geloof en wetenschap met elkaar verzoent. Paus Franciscus heeft geen enkele moeite met het aanvaarden van de cijfers die wetenschappers over het opwarmen van deze planeet verzamelen en publiceren: "Science and religion, with their distinctive approaches to understanding reality, can enter into an intense dialogue fruitful for both."

Nog geen uur nadat deze encycliek op internet verscheen, gratis in tal van talen te downloaden, werd het nog nauwelijks gebruikte Twitter-account @Pontifex actief. Vaak voorzien van de hashtag #LaudatoSi presenteerde het Vaticaan in 63 Tweets een schitterende verzameling van quotes, alles direct ontleend aan het herderlijk schrijven.

In plaats van een dag studie op deze brief, bracht de Paus zijn boodschap terug tot een bloemlezing van eenvoudige one-liners die zijn weerga niet kent. Hier een aantal van de beste, in het Engels:
