Ze bevestigen dat er binnen een onderneming speelruimte moet zijn om ideeën uit te proberen. Werknemers bij Google mogen 20 procent van hun werktijd eigen plannetjes uitproberen. Let wel: op een werkweek van een week is dat een volle dag. Hoe innoveert Google?

How can Western companies ensure that their procurement activities in developing countries benefit all parties, including the poor? This is the question addressed by a recent publication, ‘Sustainable procurement from developing countries’, which documents three successful examples of Dutch companies (Unifine, Ahold/Bakker Barendrecht and Agrofair) doing just that. One of the case studies in this new publication focuses on the collaboration between Unifine (Intertaste) and the Cotton Tree Foundation Ginger Enterprise (CTFGE) in Sierra Leone. Unifine is the third biggest player in the Dutch spice industry.

Fair-trade greeting-cards company, FairMail, is spreading its wings. Operational in Peru since 2007, in February 2009 it will open its doors to the teenagers of Varanasi in India. Varanesi, located on the Ganges and one of the oldest cities in the world, is the first of a series of new production centres through which FairMail aims to penetrate 6 new greeting-card markets. The next production unit will be set up in Morocco (2010).

Development minister Bert Koenders from the Netherlands is to meet with Philips to voice his concerns about a new solar-powered lamp that has recently gone on sale in Ghana. The lamp “is simply too expensive”, said Koenders after visiting Ghana last week. The solar lamp was specially developed by Philips for the African market and retails at 75 euro in Ghana. Each days charge will provide 250 lumens (the equivalent light of 250 candles) for 4-5 hours.

Prominent Dutch pension fund ABP has committed USD 75 million to the Private Equity Fund of BlueOrchard, the worlds leading commercial microfinance investment manager. The investment makes ABP the leading European private investor in microfinance.

On July 12 a selection of the worlds top soccer players will face off in a charity match in the Allianz Arena in Munich to raise funds for educational and development programs in Africa. The match has been organised in honour of Nelson Mandelas 90th birthday by the Goal4Africa organisation, a global funding mechanism and awareness campaign of Dutch origin.

This year a cheap, adjustable, ‘universal’ spectacle, which could improve the lives of millions of people in developing countries with poor vision, will be tested both practically and commercially. The concept behind these adjustable spectacles was first developed in 2003 at the VU University Medical Centre (VUmc) in Amsterdam. In 2005, the VUmc joined forces with the d.o.b. foundation, which funds and supports social entrepreneurs, in order to start up the mass production of the universal spectacles (u-specs). In 2006 VUmc handed over its immediate involvement to the d.o.b foundation. The cost for the adjustable glasses is less than 4 euros.
