The British-Dutch multinational Unilever, largest tea company in the world, plans to source its entire tea supply in a sustainable way, following the standards of the international environmental NGO Rainforest Alliance. "This decision will transform the tea industry, which has been suffering for many years from oversupply and underperformance," said Unilever CEO Patrick Cescau last week, presenting the plan in Fontainebleau at the famous business school INSEAD.

Disasters, like the tsunami, famine, civil war or the AIDS-pandemic, have always spurred companies to counter distress, grief and destruction. But nowadays corporate social responsibility is way beyond donations or philanthropy, and extends to joint efforts to tackle the problems of developing countries. The hidden experience in partnerships between companies and NGOs is now being mined by the UN Global Compact and Dalberg Global Development Advisors. They conduct a survey that will lead to a list of the 100 leading NGOs and UN agencies.

Als je alles bij elkaar optelt, stoot van alle fossiele brandstoffen een warmtekrachtcentrale op aardgas minder CO2-uit dan een kerncentrale. Dan zijn er alle inspanningen om de grondstof te delven meegerekend -de zogenaamde indirecte koolstofdioxide-emissies. Zo'n rekensom komt zelfs erg ongunstig uit voor zonne-energie. Ook daar wordt bij het delven van grondstoffen nogal wat CO2 verbruikt, net als bij de uraniumwinning voor kernenergie. Het meest gunstige is een warmtekrachtcentrale die gevoed wordt met biomassa. Het meest ongunstige voor het klimaat een centrale die gestookt wordt met bruinkool. Dat heeft het Duitse Öko-Institut in Darmstadt berekend. Four billion people at the Base of the Pyramid (BOP) live in relative poverty. Yet, they represent a purchasing power of 5 trillion USD. The International Finance Corporation and the World Resources Institute have published a report, this week, in which for the first time the market size of the BoP is measured. To meet the needs of these four billion people, new business strategies are wanted for, the report states. Among the successful enterprises are Dutch-based multinationals like Philips, Celtel and Unilever.

Small coffee farmers in the conflict-ridden south-western province of Colombia have increased their income with 50% in one year. This spectacular result derives from a public-private partnership (PPP) that started in May 2005. Framers, traders, NGOs, local authorities and the Dutch government are involved in a comprehensive programme that intends to lead to sustainable development.

Nooit eerder gezien, in een glossy van een vliegtuigmaatschappij. Hoeveel brandstof gebruikt een vliegtuig? De Zweedse maatschappij SAS doet het wel, voor de hele vloot zelfs. En wat denkt u, wat is het zuinigste toestel? Het is de Airbus A319-100, een middelgroot vliegtuig waar 141 passagiers in kunnen. De Airbus kan dan ook maar liefst 5000 kilometer vliegen. En verbruikt dan 0,027 liter per stoel per kilometer. Met dank aan SAS zet P+ het kilometerverbruik van alle toestellen uit de groepsvloot op een rij, in volgorde van brandstofgebruik.

P+ feliciteert de nieuwe minister voor Milieu prof. dr. Jacqueline Cramer. De hoogleraar Duurzaam Ondernemen zit al vanaf de start van P+ in de Board of Recommendation. Sterker nog: voordat de allereerste aflevering van P+ uitkwam, adviseerde zij bij haar thuis enthousiast over de belangrijkste issues die speelden op het gebied van maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen. Het is het onderwerp dat zij als Kroonlid in de Sociaal Economische Raad samen met voorzitter Herman Wijffels op de nationale agenda plaatste. Zelf terugkijkend, zegt ze: "Het is ongelooflijk hoeveel mensen zich nu al met MVO bemoeien. Het is een wonder. Zo snel gaan die dingen meestal niet."

The Netherlands should become a global leader in sustainability. In an urgent appeal to the parties involved in forming a new Dutch cabinet, some one hundred (135) Dutch SMEs call for an inspiring national strategy on sustainable development. According to Willem Lageweg, director of the Dutch CSR-network MVO-Nederland, such an ambitious strategy is as yet unseen in the world, but he estimates that the time is ripe.

Mappen, lijstjes en overzichten, we zijn er gek op. Het World Resources Institute heeft nu een kaart uitgebracht waarop de CO2-emissies van bijna honderd landen ter wereld op de 51 staten van de VS zijn geprojecteerd. En ja, Nederland linksboven lijkt wel wat op Michigan. Zo zie je in één oogopslag hoeveel wij - en deze Amerikaanse staat - aan broeikasgassen uitstoten. Wij hebben 16 miljoen inwoners, zij bijna 10 miljoen. Wij hebben de Randstad. Zij hebben Detroit, de stad van Ford, General Motors, Daimler Chrysler en Motown. Prachtig vergelijkingsmateriaal. Nu alleen nog de noodzakelijke stappen ondernemen.
